Crime Prevention Meeting in Ballard

As reported on the local myballard.com blog, Thursday Oct 6th, 2011, more than 30 people gathered at the Ballard Community Center to talk about crime in the neighborhood.  Representatives from Seattle Police Community outreach, SPD crime prevention coordinator, BallardCommunity Center and Ballard District Council were all there to answer questions.

The most prominent concern was homelessness and public intoxication.  In addition, there were concerns raised about graffiti and theft. The representatives from SPD repeatedly advised concerned residents to call 911 and stated that 911 was not only for life and death situations.  The local crime prevention coordination, Terrie Johnston, advised against calling the non-emergency number noting that “it’s not very friendly.”

There are only 10 officers to cover the Ballard area.  911 calls are prioritized, which would explain the long response time to calls.  Many of the residents felt their calls were not taken seriously.  The SPD advised to enlist neighbors and call incidents at the same time to move it up in priority.

Please follow the link to contact your SPD community outreach representative.

Auto Break-ins

With the increase in unemployment, the crime rate has increased as well.  Just a friendly reminder to lock and park your cars in the garage whenever possible.  There are gangs watching women drive into the Green Lake parking lots.  They are watching you put your purses and valuables in your trunks.  Remember to put your purses and valuable in your trunk before parking.  Olympic Manor was vandalized last night, August 24th, 2011.  A few cars were broken into around the duplex area.  Lock your home doors as well.

The Ballard Locks

Ballard Locks

The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, which was built in 1911 and often referred to as the Ballard Locks, provides a gateway for boats between the salt water of Puget Sound and the fresh water of the Ship Canal, that connects eastward to Lake Union as well as Lake Washington.

Both locals and Tourists alike love watching the all the sailboats, yachts,  tugs and barges passing through, as the locks’ water levels are manipulated to allow their safe passage.

Another popular area to check out here is the fish ladder which was created to let salmon pass safely between fresh and salt water and also to navigate the locks. Glass panels beneath the water line make it easy to watch the salmon as they swim through the ladder.
